Find an author you LOVE and study his or her work. Explore their voice, the topics they write about/what matters to them, the crafting moves they make. Be in awe!
For me, Ralph Fletcher is one of the many authors I LOVE! Below are a few power points I created to inspire students to fall in love too. I had a station in my classroom where laptops were set up and students could add to each of these power points. Google Docs would be a perfect place for students to work collaboratively collecting writer’s crafts used by their favorite authors.

You can use the same structure when immersing students in a genre study:

As my students grew to love Ralph, we often asked ourselves, “What would Ralph do?” when struggling with a piece. (Inspired by WWJD, we used WWRD?) Students then listed their revision strategies and suggestions on butcher paper below this heading.
